Celebrating The Founder, Reverend Father Awulu Innocent Arome, CSSp

Celebrating Reverend Father Awulu Innocent Arome, CSSp : As we gather to honor Reverend Father Awulu Innocent Arome, CSSp, on the momentous occasion of his 50th anniversary, we reflect upon a remarkable journey marked by faith, service, and a deep commitment to humanity. Born on October 19, 1975, to the late Mr. Simon Awulu and Mrs. Bibiana Ekele in Lafiagi Pategi, Kwara State, Nigeria, Father Awulu was blessed to be nurtured in a Christian environment that laid the foundation for his incredible academic and spiritual journey.

From his early education in Benue/Kogi States, Father Awulu demonstrated an eagerness for knowledge and a desire to serve. In 1996, he felt a divine calling to join the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (CSSp), a missionary congregation dedicated to supporting the poor, the needy, and the marginalized while spreading the Gospel in challenging circumstances. This decision would chart the course for his life’s mission.

Father Awulu embarked on a rigorous formation journey, beginning with the postulancy at Akabo, Imo State (1996–1997),followed by a formative year in the novitiate at Awo-mmama, Imo State (1997–1998). His academic pursuits took him to theUniversity of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy (1998–2002). He then completed a year of pastoral experience in Onitsha, Anambra State, before advancing his theological studies at the Spiritan International School of Theology also in Enugu State (2003–2007). His dedication culminated with a Master’s degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, USA.

Ordained on July 14, 2007, at St. Boniface Cathedral in Idah, Father Awulu was swiftly sent on his first missionary assignment to the Central African Republic, a challenging environment where he would serve for seven years, embodying Spiritan spirituality with unwavering commitment.

Fr. Awulu is well travelled and has gained rich intercultural experiences through visits to various parts of the world. His journeys have taken him to several countries, including France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Kenya, Cameroon, Canada, Benin, Togo, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, among others.

Upon his return to Nigeria in 2014, Father Awulu continued his mission as the parish priest of St. Theresa’s Odomomoh and later as the Dean of the Ibaji Deanery. Following his election to the Provincial Leadership Team, Father Awulu embraced a new mission as he took up his posting at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish in Sabon Lugbe, Abuja, and later at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Farin Gida Mando, Kaduna State. His influence extended beyond the pulpit as he served as the Zonal Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), advocating for unity and support among Christians.

In addition to his pastoral work, Father Awulu founded the Practical Living in Christ Humanitarian Foundation, inspired by his experiences with the suffering communities he encountered during his missionary work.

This foundation is a testament to his lifelong commitment to alleviating human suffering and fostering hope among the marginalized. This reflects his selfless, detached, and generous spirit, and embodies his vision of doing little things in extraordinary ways. A major and beloved guiding quote in his life is:

“Owe no one anything except to love one another, for love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans13:8).

He is an advocate of practical Christianity, guided by kingdom principles and committed to international best practices.

Father Awulu is not only a revered priest but also a seasoned football referee, showcasing his diverse talents and passion for life. He is known as a renowned international mediator for peace and reconciliation, striving to bridge divides and foster understanding in a world often marked by conflict.

His fervent zeal and radical missionary spirit have made a significant impact on countless lives. Father Awulu is a passionate advocate for souls, demonstrating devotion to his calling that resonates through his actions and outreach.

Today, as we celebrate Reverend Father Awulu Innocent Arome, who continues his missionary endeavour in Canada, we recognize not just the milestones of his journey but the profound influence he has had on many lives.
